Will Cayanan, Arthur Omura & Heeguen Song: a Celebration of Local Artists

Sunday, June 25th, 2023 - 4pm
$15 youth/limited income, $15 live-stream $20 Senior/Student, $25 general admission
Tickets available through Eventbrite.

We are so disappointed: we will be postponing our November 13th performance to 2023. One of the featured artists has tested positive for COVID, therefore, we have made the decision to keep our community safe and postpone the concert. The new date for the performance will be announced in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned to your inbox for the updated schedule.

Calliope is delighted to present this special celebration of hyper-local artists: Arthur Omura on harpsichord, William Cayanan on cello, and Heeguen Song on violin. Each of the three artists will perform a solo set, in addition to collaborating on several pieces including works by Rameau, Bach, Gabrieli and Vitali.

We are thrilled to highlight artists who are deeply committed to our community; Mr. Omura grew up in Albany and attended Albany public schools before graduating from University of Southern California with both bachelor's and master's degrees in music. Mr. Cayanan grew up locally, attended Berkeley public schools, and has just completed his performance studies, with a Master's degree in cello performance from Jacobs School of Music at University of Indiana, and a bachelor's from Cleveland Institute of Music. Dr. Song lives right around the corner from St. Alban's, and last appeared for us as a member of Ensemble Ari in November of 2021. She attended Oberlin Conservatory, and both the Juilliard and Yale Schools of Music.

Your safe enjoyment of this wonderful music is our first priority! All artists, guests, and staff must be fully vaccinated and boosted for Covid 19 in order to attend. We will ask for proof of vaccination at the door. At this time, we are also requiring an N95, KN95, or double mask be worn, properly covering nose and mouth, throughout the performance.

Join us in person OR by live-stream!

WE GUARANTEE ALL OF OUR PERFORMERS A MINIMUM FAIR WAGE - thanks to people like you.

Program Notes:

Arthur Omura's Program:

  • Rameau's Kondiaronk in Paris

War has a way of making strange allies. For instance, in the 17th and 18th centuries, France was engaged in a series of wars with and against several Native American tribes in the Great Lakes region, and the peoples of the Americas were considered deeply fascinating. Their philosophy, in particular, captured the imagination of Enlightenment France, specifically their dedication to equality and to democratic participation in politics. The composer Jean-Philippe Rameau was so impressed by the Americans he wrote an opera about them. This program is made up of a harpsichord transcription Rameau made of that Opera.

Heeguen Song's Program:

  • Bach sonata for solo violin No.1 in g minor

  • Vitali Chaconne in g minor for violin and piano, accompanied by Arthur Omura on harpsichord

William Cayanan's Program:

  • Giovanni Gabrieli - Ricercar no.5 in D; Ricercar no.1 in G; Ricercar no.3 in C; Ricercar no. 2

  • Jean-Zevalt Triemer, Sonata in C, accompanied by Arthur Omura on harpsichord:

  • I. Largo

  • II. Allegro

  • III. Cantabile

  • IV. Tempo di Gavotta

  • V. Giga Allegro

Artist Profiles:

William Cayanan, Cello: William attended Berkeley public schools, where, under the tutelage of Madeline Prager, he started playing the cello in fourth grade at Malcolm X Elementary, continuing at Longfellow and in the Berkeley High Band and Orchestra program. William enjoys a career as a cellist and composer, and makes beats when he can. He is currently the Associate Principal Cellist of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Assistant Principal Cellist of the Terre Haute Symphony. While pursuing graduate degrees at Indiana University (IU), he studied cello with Eric Kim and composition with P.Q. Phan, and has appeared as a concerto soloist with the IU Baroque Orchestra. William completed his undergraduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Richard Weiss and Melissa Kraut, while earning a minor in composition with Keith Fitch. A passionate chamber player, he has also performed with members of Quatuor Ebene and the Ariel String Quartet.

Arthur Omura, harpsichord: Arthur, who grew up in Albany and attended Albany public schools, learned to play the organ at St. Alban's before becoming a specialist in historical keyboard instruments. After falling in love with the harpsichord at University of Southern California, from which he holds his Master's of Music, he built his first harpsichord at St. Alban's. He studied with Charles Rus in San Francisco, and with Dr. Ladd Thomas and Dr. Lucinda Carver at USC. He has performed at the Boston and Berkeley Early Music festivals and given numerous performances in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Omura keeps an active performance schedule as an organist and harpsichord player. He has worked with MicroFest, wildUp, iPalpiti, Les Surprises Baroques, Musica Angelica, and the American Bach Soloists. Omura has collaborated on several recordings, most recently on "Kontrapunktus", a collection of new music by composer Mark Moya written in a Baroque idiom. His interest in instrument making and organology led him to work with harpsichord builder Curtis Berak, whom he has assisted in restoring several instruments, and with organ builder Manuel Rosales. Omura is the director of music at Grace Episcopal Church in Martinez, CA.

Heeguen Song, Violin: An Albany resident and native of South Korea, Heeguen Song is the associate Concertmaster of the SF Ballet Orchestra. Dr. Song is an active chamber musician and is a member of Beaubliss Quartet and Ensemble Ari. She has performed at Yale Chamber Music Society, Yellowbarn Music Festival, Taos Music Festival, and Banff Chamber Music Residency. Heeguen was invited to play at Osaka City Hall, Daejeon Chamber Music Festival, Beethoven institute at New School and City University of NY. Additionally, Heeguen gave a solo debut recital at Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and had solo appearances with many orchestras such as SF Ballet Orchestra, Oberlin Orchestra, Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble 212, and Camerata Academica de Merida. She was a prize winner at the Henryk Szeryng International Competition, Irving M Klein Competition, and Kingsville International Competition among others. Heeguen studied at Oberlin Conservatory, the Juilliard School, Yale School of music and Rutgers University under the direction of Almita Vamos, Masao Kawasaki, Peter Oundjian, and Arnold Steinhardt. https://www.sfballet.org/artist/heeguen-song/
