Berkeley High grad and rising young jazz trombonist Remee Ashley's music is steeped in the traditions of his community; his church, St. Paul A.M.E.; his mother, the extraordinary jazz singer Jay Whittington, his music teachers in the Berkeley public schools (including Sarah Cline and Karen Wells, among so many more!) honed and polished through his studies and practice. Remee recently earned both his BA and MA in trombone performance from Manhattan School of Music, and will start work on his PhD at USC in September. For this performance, he will be joined by fellow phenoms Ethan Ostrow on piano (BHS, Manhattan School of Music); Isaac Coyle on bass viol (El Cerrito High, Berklee College of Music) and Matanda Keyes (Manhattan School of Music; Skyline High, Oakland). Don't miss this opportunity to hear them perform as they embark on notable careers.

Artist Profiles

Remee Ashley/Trombone: A native Berkeleyan, trombonist/composer/arranger and educator Remee Ashley developed a deep love for music through the nourishment and support of his mother, Jay Whittington, his church, St. Paul A.M.E., and his experience in the music programs in Berkeley's public schools. Exploring his love for music introduced him to the trombone at the age of nine, where he continued his music journey performing with various ensembles including the Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble, Berkeley High Chamber Winds, the SFJazz All-Stars Big Band, the Jazzschool Studio Big Band, and the 2016 Grammy Band Ensemble.

In 2016, Remee moved to New York to attend the Manhattan School of Music. During his time there, while pursuing both his Bachelors and Masters degrees, he performed at Dizzy’s Coca Cola, the Apollo Theatre, Carnegie Hall, and the Birdland Jazz Club alongside critically acclaimed musicians including Billy Childs, Joe Lavano, Jon Faddis, Arturo O’Farrill, Terence Blanchard, and Paquito D’Rivera and performed at the 2021 New York Fashion Week under the direction of LaQuan Smith.

Mr. Ashley has recently graduated with both of those degrees, and will be returning to California to pursue his Doctorate of Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California starting in the Fall of 2022.

Ethan Ostrow/Piano: a New York/Bay Area-based pianist, composer, and teacher originally from Berkeley, CA. He's had the opportunity to headline and perform at some of the Bay Area’s finest venues including Yoshi’s, The Fox Theater, The Freight & Salvage, Maybeck Studios, and more.

Ethan strives for an intense, lush sound and demonstrates deep personal expression. Ethan’s music ranges from soaring melodies over head-banging rock grooves, to intimate reflective ballads. Having led a double-life as an actor for many years, Ethan understands the power of storytelling, and brings it to his music every performance.

Ethan frequently combines his love of music with his passion for cancer charity work, and is proud to have raised over $55,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through his "Concert for a Cure" series.

Ethan is currently a student at the Manhattan School of Music, being mentored by Stefon Harris, Dayna Stephens and Jeremy Manasia. He has also studied with Bay Area legend Susan Muscarella, and spent a year in Minneapolis playing with and learning from Phil Hey (Dewey Redman) and Dean Sorenson (Glenn Miller Orchestra, Frank Sinatra).

Isaac Coyle/bass viol: Bassist Isaac Coyle originally hails from El Cerrito. He began his musical studies on guitar at the age of 6, but switched to primarily playing bass at the age of 14. While in high school Isaac had the opportunity to study under many fantastic musicians such as Howard Wiley, Ben Wolfe, Jeff Chambers and others. He was also a part of honor bands such as the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and Sfjazz High School All-Stars, while continuing to gig frequently around the Bay Area. He graduated from El Cerrito High School in 2019 and currently attends the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full tuition scholarship, studying with Linda Oh, Tia Fuller, and formerly with the late great Ralph Peterson.

Matanda Keyes/drums: Matanda Keyes is a New York City and Oakland, California based multi-disciplinary artist, with a formal background in drumset performance, musical composition, and woodworking. He recently graduated from Manhattan School of Music in spring 2021 with a BM in Jazz Studies. Splicing visual-art, fashion, dance, and music composition, Matanda tells stories of artisans, warriors, and laborers. He has studied with masters of music like Frank Lacy and Buster Williams, and has been championed by contemporary leaders such as Christian Scott and Stefon Harris. His notable projects include the score for YAY, a short film which has premiered at festivals across Europe and North America, and the development of the 4th Dimensional Improvisation music curriculum. Currently, Matanda is finalizing his debut album, touring domestically and internationally with alternative rock / pop artists such as Isaac Dunbar, and Quiet Luke, assisting in art direction for modern jazz performances, and developing an artisanal multi-media project entitled Parsody..
